Hosta

The hosta is a lily-like perennial that is native to northern Asia. Recently the hosta has gained popularity in the United States, particularly for their usefulness as ground cover plants and for their ability to thrive in partially shaded areas.

Hostas are easy to care for, making them an ideal landscaping. They are excellent, low maintenance, perennials that are beautiful and versatile.

Hostas care starts from the planting stage. Unlike most plants, hostas are shipped with bare roots. This means they are not pre-packed with potting soil. Before planting the roots should be soaked in tepid water for about 30 minutes. After it has been planted, the hosta should be well watered to help acclimate it to its new environment.

It is always wise to use fertilizer for any plants, as the natural nutrients in the soil may not be adequate in some cases. Several fertilizer choices exist including liquid, granular, and extended release granular - each of these have their own benefits and limitations and one may be more preferable to others under different circumstances.

Hosta care continues with regular maintenance and grooming of the hosta and its surroundings. Keeping weeds and other undesirable grasses clear of the immediate area as well as regular watering helps hostas to be one of the best ground covering perennials available.
