The Tracker was a mini SUV produced by GEO, a subsidiary brand owned by General Motors. GEO Produced several models intended to provide stiff competition in a market where economical import vehicles were growing in popularity. GEO was also used as a go-between venture for General Motors.

Introduction of this line allowed General Motors to partner with many foreign auto manufacturers without ruining their reputation as an American brand made with American parts. With the Tracker GM chose to partner with CAMI(Canadian Automotive Manufacturing Inc), GM also contracted with Suzuki for the four cylinder engines, as well as many of the other mechanical parts in the Geo Tracker.

The Geo Tracker Ramp Up

The GEO Tracker was advertised in Late 1988. The SUV arrived on dealers lots and was available for purchase for the 1989 model year. The bright color paint schemes, multi colored graphics and interiors quickly grabbed the attention of generation X'ers who were coming of age and hitting the market in search of what would be their first "new" vehicle. Many viewed the tracker as as a revolutionary vehicle that addressed many of the needs these new consumers were after. Buyers were attracted to the idea that you were getting a vehicle with a removable convertible like roof, four wheel drive, and excellent fuel economy all in one package.

The Geo Tracker 4x4 served as one of the first alternatives to expensive gas guzzling full size trucks and SUVs. In many ways the tracker is considered a pioneer in the SUV world, And played a vital part in paving the way to today's SUV craze.

As the Geo Tracker model grew in age so did its customers, and as a result GM recognized the need to make a standard four door hardtop SUV that was more appealing to the "family" market. Geo Trackers remained in production and were sold in the United States until 1997.

Transition to the Chevy Tracker

After 1997 the vehicle was rebadged by GM and sold as a Chevrolet Tracker.

In the United States the Chevy Tracker was sold until 2004, when it was discontinued.

The Chevy Tracker was never as popular with 4x4 enthusiasts.  The redesigned Tracker has a lighter suspension and steering system that were no where near as rugged as earlier versions had been.

Other Cars Based off the Geo Tracker

During its life span the Geo Tracker SUV was used as a platform for many models such as the Suzuki Sidekick, Suzuki Samuri, Chevrolet Tracker, and Suzuki Grand Vitara.

Under its many name tags this vehicle enjoyed worldwide popularity, Production was officially canceled of after 2007 models were completed in Mexico, the remaining production vehicles were sold in Mexico and South America.

Repairing the Geo Tracker

Despite no longer being produced many Geo Trackers and their rebadged counterparts are still on the road worldwide.   It is fairly easy to find replacement Geo Tracker parts.  So whether you're doing simple things like fixing the brakes or if you need to find a whole new Geo Tracker engine, there are parts available.

Many off road enthusiasts enjoy modifying their Geo Track SUVs.  This is primarly due to their simple design that makes them easy to work on and repair.  Combine that with their rugged chassis, and you have a solid vehicle.

With so many hobbiests working on them, the Geo Trackers have found their way into many forms of motor sports including hill and rock climbing, four wheeling, and mud racing. these SUVs have also been known to be adapted into search and recovery vehicles due to their compact size and ability to fit into trails and tight conditions that many larger trucks and SUVs cannot access.
